George Carlin: 1937-2008

These days, most comedians swear like sailors and revel in shocking their audiences, but for standup comedy pioneers like George Carlin, who died yesterday of heart failure, swearing and shocking were not gratuitous. He wanted to shake up a hypocritical society and make people think about what "clean" language hides underneath it. (His famous "Seven Words You Can't Say on Television" routine got him arrested and went all the way to the Supreme Court, where they ruled that his language was "indecent" but not "obscene.") George Carlin will always be remembered as a comic genius. Here's a clip of George railing against euphemisms — a crank and a gadfly to the end.

What’s the Big Idea Behind This Sneaky Gatorade Ad?

I watched the following vid and was overjoyed to see a chick finally kick arse at a male sporting event. But a little research later revealed that our bat girl never made this Spidey-inspired catch; the vid is actually a staged advertisement for Gatorade. The illegitimacy of the play makes me wonder if the Gatorade folks are mocking women's athletic potential with this ad, or on the flip side, if they're seeking to unsettle established gender norms and advance the girls-can-do-anything message. Or a bit a both? Tell me what you think.

Dumbass of the Day

Some dude decided to rob a liquor store, but encountered one problem: he had no weapon. So Desperado improvised by grabbing a palm frond and holding it in the air like a spear. The video surveillance footage below also shows him waving the frond around and pounding it on the counter while demanding $50 from the clerk. Did our dumbass get his money? Let's just say the "super-scary" leaf in his hand fooled no one . . .

It’s a Dirty Job, But Some Social Networking Site Has to Do It

While I was watching some dude sing about the day his wife met his girlfriend and all the marital strife that followed, I happened to notice the following advertisement pop up at the bottom of the vid for — prepare yourself — AffairMatch.com. This married personals site prides itself on being a "discreet sanctuary for lonely wives and cheating husbands." Ahem, running banner ads all over the net isn't exactly what I'd call "discreet," but this site isn't in the business of upholding promises anyway. So much for that fairy-tale ending . . .

Superbad: The Action Film

You know it as yet another Judd Apatow-esque bros-before-ho's comedy, but with the right music and editing, Superbad is a really good action film, albeit with the dorkiest-looking protagonists ever to star in that genre. (I'd love to see it branch out into horror, chick-flick, and sci-fi genres. Maybe even a ninja flick. When there's a will, there's a way!)

Cassedy04, with her shot of a sign that might be too honest about its target audience, and Uspens, who found an altered public transportation sign advertising a rather odd all-you-can eat buffet. Congratulations to both of you on your $500 prize!

Thanks to everyone who submitted a sign. They were hilarious and it was a difficult decision! Keep an eye on GiggleSugar: we're going to post runners up throughout the week.

Gas prices aren't the only thing to go up, people! Even the beloved dollar store has had to hike its prices. When will the madness end?!

Did the Cookie Monster Say What I Think He Said?

This particular episode of Sesame Street was brought to us by the letter "F." In keeping with the theme of the program, the Cookie Monster was to use a word beginning with the letter "F" to describe the fabulously fantastic cookie in his hand. One of Jimmy Kimmel's censors, however, didn't approve of the Cookie Monster's word choice and gave him the *bleep*. We can now only wonder what was really said...

Office Team Building Exercise Is Kind of a Big Deal

Most workplaces emphasize the value of teamwork. Some even force their employees to partake in mandatory team building exercises, which usually amount to a giant waste of everyone's time. But not in this instance. These ladies proved that they could work as a team and make the most productive use of their time, too. Let's just say they have a leg up on the competition . . .

We see a lot of guys doing parkour, that urban sport of jumping over things that get in your way. This is the first time I've seen a woman do it. I can't even last for 10 minutes on a treadmill without wanting to call it a day! Maybe it's her brand of coffee...(Thanks, eBaum's World!)
